Introductions and Why You Need MPower

My name is Dr. Jennifer Perez. I've been a pediatrician for over 15 years. I'm the mom of two boys, and over the last year, I've taken a really deep dive into my great passion which is taking care of kids with overweight and obesity. I have taken the coursework to become board certified in obesity medicine. And from there came this new business venture that is MPower Wellness

 

I've also become very interested in lifestyle medicine; the idea that working on nutrition, sleep, mindfulness, avoiding toxic substances like excess screens, and improved mental health can help with almost all facets of our overall health. I’m also passionate about challenges in parenting. These are all topics that I want to tackle on the podcast. 

 

What sets us apart from other places where you get your information is that we'll be bringing you the newest and most up-to-date scientifically backed, medically driven information. And just as importantly, strategies to help guide you and your family implement them. 

 

I'm lucky enough to say that MPower is a family business. My cohost, Producer, the COO of MPower and our other businesses, and most importantly, my big brother... Jose Perez;

 

I’m very excited to be co-hosting the podcast!

 

Like many of you out there, I'm also very interested in gaining some new insight and information. As someone who has struggled with weight their entire life; we both have. it’s very interesting to get really scientific information. I’m somebody who has always been looking for that quick and easy answer, new fad or new trend out there. I've tried them all. and none of them have worked, so I want to learn how to do it right with science. 

 

I'm also here to represent you, as the non-clinical person. I’ll push back and ask question and for clarification. If you have questions to you want to ask, or topics you want to cover, please reach out!

It's Not Working

55% of obese children go on to be obese in adolescence

80% of obese adolescents will still be obese in adulthood 

70% will be obese over age 30

For Decades, the only tool we were using to treat overweight and obesity was..

Eat Less and Exercise More

But luckily, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has released the first ever, Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) for the treatment of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents.

In it, they recommend IHBLT, Intensive Health Behavior Lifestyle Treatment

as the first line treatment for all children with overweight or obesity

 

This approach recognized Obesity as a Chronic Disease and focuses on behavior change in addition to better nutrition and increased movement

It involves the entire family, is frequent and over 3-12 months.

In the CPG, they report a “significant reduction in BMI” in 

28% of patients participating in less than 5 hours of treatment and 

75% of patients participating in the most hours (>26) 

 

This approach IS working

And this is at the core of what we do at MPower
